Trump urges Nato to back sanctions on Russia, calls for 50–100% tariffs on China
Social media was quick to notice that Trump’s face looked unusual during the 9/11 memorial ceremony, with many speculating he may have suffered a mini-stroke. AFP

US President Donald Trump has urged Nato allies to take tough action against Moscow, proposing tariffs of 50 to 100 per cent on China until the Russia-Ukraine war ends.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said Washington was ready to push new sanctions on Russia but only if European partners stopped buying Russian oil and joined in coordinated measures.

“As you know, Nato’s commitment to win has been far less than 100 per cent, and the purchase of Russian oil, by some, has been shocking! Anyway, I am ready to ‘go’ when you are. Just say when,” Trump wrote.

He argued that Nato should impose punitive tariffs on China, claiming Beijing has “a strong control, and even grip, over Russia.” These tariffs, he said, would stay in place until peace is restored.

Calling the conflict a “deadly, but ridiculous war,” Trump alleged that 7,118 people had been killed in the past week alone. He insisted the war “would never have started” under his leadership, branding it “Biden’s and Zelenskyy’s war.”

“I am only here to help stop it, and save thousands of Russian and Ukrainian lives. If Nato does as I say, the war will end quickly… If not, you are just wasting my time, and the time, energy, and money of the United States,” he added.

Trump’s letter comes after earlier warnings of sanctions on Moscow and on nations buying its oil, including major buyers China and India, if the Ukraine war drags on.

A new poll shows Senator Flavio Bolsonaro has emerged as the main challenger to President Lula, narrowing Lula's lead to just four points in a simulated runoff. First-round polling indicates Bolsonaro's support is rising, reflecting shifting voter sentiment ahead of the October 2026 election. Flavio's momentum is fueled by conservative voters rallying behind him and growing dissatisfaction with Lula's administration.
