US President Donald Trump on Sunday applauded the leaders of Thailand and Cambodia for agreeing to a ceasefire, following weeks of deadly border clashes that left dozens dead and displaced over a million people.

“I want to congratulate both great leaders on their brilliance in coming to this rapid and very fair conclusion,” Trump said, highlighting what he described as a quick resolution to the conflict.

On his Truth Social platform, he called the outcome “FAST & DECISIVE, as all of these situations should be!”

How did US help in mediation?

Trump took pride in Washington’s role in helping mediate the talks, alongside China and Malaysia, adding, “perhaps the United States has become the REAL United Nations. The United Nations must start getting active and involved in WORLD PEACE!”

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also welcomed the ceasefire, urging both nations to “immediately honour this commitment.”

The human price of conflict

The border clashes, which reignited earlier this month after a previous truce collapsed, claimed at least 47 lives and displaced over one million people across nearly every border province on both sides, according to official tallies.

As part of the ceasefire, Thailand and Cambodia pledged to stop fighting, freeze troop movements, and allow civilians in border areas to return home safely.

China steps in

Following the truce, China’s top diplomat Wang Yi began hosting the Cambodian and Thai foreign ministers for a two-day series of talks starting Sunday. Wang told Cambodian counterpart Prak Sokhonn that the ceasefire “has opened the process of rebuilding peace.”

He added, “Both sides should proceed step by step to promote a comprehensive and lasting ceasefire” and “rebuild mutual trust.”

Myanmar’s first post-coup election sees low turnout amid civil war and credibility concerns

Myanmar held the first phase of its general election since the 2021 military coup amid civil war, low turnout, and widespread criticism over its credibility. Opposition parties are largely barred, key leaders like Aung San Suu Kyi remain detained, and the military-backed USDP is expected to dominate. The UN and Western governments denounced the polls as neither free nor fair, while violence and boycotts further undermined participation.
