Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow over the sudden death of former president of Suriname Chandrikapersad Santokhi, calling it a profound loss not only for Suriname but also for the global Indian diaspora.
In his message, PM Modi highlighted Santokhi’s strong cultural affinity with India, noting his symbolic decision to take the presidential oath in Sanskrit. This gesture reflected his deep respect for Indian heritage and traditions. He also emphasised Santokhi’s consistent efforts to strengthen bilateral relations between India and Suriname, particularly in areas of culture, trade, and development cooperation.
“Deeply shocked and saddened by the sudden demise of my friend and the former President of Suriname, Mr. Chandrikapersad Santokhi Ji. This is not only an irreparable loss to Suriname but also to the global Indian diaspora,” PM Modi said.
Santokhi, 67, served as President of Suriname from 2020 to 2025 and was widely recognised for his integrity, administrative discipline, and reform-oriented leadership. Before his presidency, he held key positions, including Minister of Justice and Police from 2005 to 2010, where he gained prominence for his firm stance on law enforcement and governance. A former police commissioner, Santokhi built his career on a reputation for transparency and public service, earning respect both domestically and internationally.
Under his leadership, Suriname saw renewed engagement with India, especially through diaspora connections, given the country’s large population of Indian-origin citizens. His tenure was also marked by efforts to stabilise the economy and promote inclusive development.
PM Modi extended his heartfelt condolences to Santokhi’s family and the people of Suriname, remembering him as a valued friend of India and a leader who worked tirelessly for his nation’s progress.
