According to ARY News on Saturday, Shehbaz Sharif, the joint candidate of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and the Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP), and Omar Ayub, the nominee of the Sunni Ittehad Council, which is backed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), have both submitted their nomination papers for the role of prime minister of the nation.
The National Assembly Secretary received the nomination documents.
To become prime minister, a candidate needs to garner 169 votes out of the 336 members of parliament.
Over 200 MPs have reportedly supported the PML-N and its allies, which include the Pakistan People’s Party, according to ARY News.
However, in the elections held on February 8, independent candidates supported by Imran Khan’s PTI secured the most MPs, with 93.
Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, a member of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, was chosen on Friday to serve as the 22nd speaker of the National Assembly (NA).
The National Assembly (NA) session to choose a new NA speaker was chaired by Raja Pervaiz Ashraf. Throughout the meeting, the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) voiced protests.
A secret ballot was used to pick the speaker. Each lawmaker cast a vote separately.
Aamir Dogar of the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) garnered 91 votes, while Ayaz Sadiq, the PML-N candidate, received 199. After Raja Pervaiz Ashraf made his official announcement, Sardare Ayaz Sadiq took the oath of office as the next NA speaker.
