Iran has issued a warning to the United States, saying that it would “bear full responsibility” if Israel launches a retaliatory attack against the Islamic Republic.

Iran’s warning came hours after US President Joe Biden indicated that he was aware of Israel’s retaliation plans.

Responding to a question by a reporter on Friday during his Germany visit, Biden said he has an understanding of how and when Israel will respond to the missile attacks by Iran. He, however, declined to elaborate.

Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations, Amir Saeid Iravani, wrote a letter to UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres and the Swiss presidency of the UN Security Council following Biden’s remarks and called the US President’s statement “profoundly alarming and provocative”.

In a letter to the UN Security Council, Iravani said that Biden through his “inflammatory statement” has signalled the US “tacit approval and explicit support for Israel’s unlawful military aggression against Iran."

“The United States will bear full responsibility for its role in instigating, inciting and enabling any acts of aggression by Israel against the Islamic Republic of Iran … as well as for the catastrophic consequences on regional and international peace and security,” Iran’s UN mission says in a letter to the UN Security Council.

On October 1, Iran launched approximately 200 ballistic missiles at Israel in retaliation for the killing of Hamas, Hezbollah leaders and an Iranian Revolutionary Guard general.

Israel, an ally to the US, which is at war with Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon, both backed by Iran,  vowed revenge against Tehran for the strikes.

Last week, a report by the Washington Post quoted its sources as saying that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has told Biden that he intends to strike Iran’s military sites, and not to target nuclear or oil infrastructure.

The sources also said that Israel’s retaliatory attack on Iran would be sometime before November 5, the day when the US will vote to elect its new president.
