Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal has called on the US not to “weaponise trade” as he attended the India-US strategic partnership forum in New York.

The minister also said that New Delhi expects to increase its trade with the US in energy products in the years to come, and the country’s energy security goals will have a significant element of US involvement.

“Clearly, the world recognises that (energy security) is one area where we all have to work together. India is a big player in the energy field… we are big importers of energy from across the world, including from the US,” Goyal said.

Goyal delivered the keynote address at an event, ‘Energy Security in a Shifting Global Landscape: Building Resilient Energy Markets Across Borders’ hosted by the Consulate General of India in New York, US-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF), and India’s leading decarbonisation solutions provider, ReNew.

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal is leading a delegation in New York for meetings with US counterparts aimed at securing an early conclusion to a bilateral trade agreement. Notable attendees at the event included Member of Parliament Anurag Thakur; Pankaj Jain, Secretary in the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas; Mukesh Agni, CEO and President of USISPF; Vaishali Nigam Sinha, Co-founder of ReNew; and Sumant Sinha, Chairman and CEO of ReNew.

The ties between India and the US have been going through a rough patch after President Donald Trump increased tariffs on New Delhi for buying Russian oil, a move that he claims is “feeding” Moscow’s war machine.

Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Tuesday said Trump is open to “fixing” the punitive tariffs imposed on India. “We’ve already seen the measures we’ve taken with regards to India, although that’s something we hope we can fix. But – and the President has the ability to do more, and he’s considering doing more because of the direction this has taken,” he said.

Ukraine’s drone strikes cripple Russian diesel exports, hitting near 5-year low: 16 of 38 refineries hit

Ukraine's drone strikes on Russian oil refineries have reduced diesel exports to their lowest since 2020. US President Trump urged Europe to stop buying Russian energy, calling it funding the war against themselves. Ukraine's tactical retreats have led to heavy Russian casualties, with recent dismissals indicating a tougher stance on territorial losses.
