On Sunday, Canada declared further sanctions against Russia in response to opposition leader Alexei Navalny’s passing.
Canada’s Foreign Minister Melanie Joly stated in a statement that the most recent penalties will target six Russian officials, including senior officials and high-ranking personnel of Russia’s prosecution, judiciary, and penitentiary agencies.
Earlier, police detained at least 67 people across Russia as the funeral of opposition leader Alexei Navalny was being carried out on Friday. According to OVD-Info - a rights monitoring group - at least 67 arrests took place in 16 cities, including six arrests in Moscow, the site of Navalny’s massively attended funeral.
The organization had originally claimed that Novosibirsk was home to eighteen detainees.
There was a heavy police presence during the funeral and burial in Moscow, since the Kremlin had issued a warning that “unauthorised” protesters will face consequences.
Authorities declared on February 16 that Navalny, the most vocal opponent of Russian President Vladimir Putin, had passed away in an Arctic jail.
