Britain's ethnic minority cop alleges biased recruitment

Dal Babu, a British cop of Indian origin has made headlines with his comment that recruitment of people from ethnic minority groups in Britain’s police force is still appalling. Babu is resigning after being rejected for promotion to chief officer rank.

Chief Superintendent Babu, 49, who retires from the Metropolitan Police on Monday after 30 years’ service, said “radical measures” were needed so that police had a better understanding of different cultures, the BBC reported .

Though the Met says it had made “good progress” with ethnic recruitment, there have been reports that ethnic officers are less likely to be recruited. Even if they are recruited, there are hardly any cops belonging to ethnic minority groups higher up in the ranks.

Babu was considered unsuitable to assume the top rank because his media interview skills were not of a suitable standard despite having a glittering CV, the Guardian reported .

Greater Manchester Chief Constable Sir Peter Fahy said constabularies should be able to hire in favour of black and ethnic minority officers.

Fahy however denied the allegations made by Dal Babu saying that employment laws were to blame for the situation.

However, the Gaurdian reported Babu as saying, “I look back and I think I must have been incredibly determined. There were several times when I thought of leaving, but I loved the job.”
