At least one person was killed in a crude bomb blast in Bangladesh’s capital Dhaka on Wednesday, according to police.

The explosion occurred in the Mogbazar Mor area, outside the Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangsad Central Command office.

Police said an improvised explosive device thrown by unidentified individuals from a flyover hit a person, killing them instantly. Hatirjheel Police Station Inspector (Operations) Md Mohiuddin was quoted by The Daily Star as confirming the details.

Bangladesh appeared to be edging back towards political normalcy after the Election Commission set February 12 for the country’s first national election since the removal of Sheikh Hasina from power. That momentum was jolted, however, by the shooting and eventual death of 32-year-old student leader Sharif Osman Hadi, an incident that has once again pushed the country into instability.

STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD

The violence that followed has spread across several parts of the country and intensified an already charged political climate, with different factions interpreting the crisis in ways that suit their interests. While the interim administration maintains that the election timetable will not change, opposition voices argue that the deteriorating security situation could disrupt the process. As a result, Bangladesh’s tradition of street-driven politics has once again become volatile.

Mutual recriminations, conflicting narratives and growing demands from various quarters have raised doubts over whether the February polls can be conducted smoothly. The widening unrest — marked by a lynching in Mymensingh and attacks on diplomatic missions and media organisations — has cast fresh uncertainty over Bangladesh’s fragile political transition.
