Port-au-Prince: Haitian Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe said on Sunday he was resigning in the wake of President Michel Martelly’s statements that he was willing to have him step down to resolve the political crisis in the Caribbean nation.

“I am leaving the post of prime minister with the feeling that work was accomplished,” Lamothe said in his address to the nation.

Martelly said Friday that Lamothe was ready to resign in response to a recommendation from the Consultative Council, a body created by the president and composed of members from different sectors of Haitian society.

Haiti has been rocked by a wave of political instability unleashed by the opposition, which has staged daily protests to demand that Martelly and Lamothe resign.

The opposition accuses the two men of leading a corrupt government and has called for the release of political opponents jailed during the October protests.
