Days after the lynching of a Hindu man, another man was on Wednesday killed by a mob in Bangladesh. He has been identified as Amrit Mondal.

The police said that a mob beat Mondal to death in Rajbari district’s Pangsha area on Wednesday night, according to The Daily Star.

Since last week when the news of anti-Hasina student leader Osman Hadi broke, Bangladesh has been in the grips of nationwide street violence in which politicians, media organisations, cultural organisations, and religious minorities have been targeted.

Last week, a mob killed Das in Mymensingh district after accusing him of disrespecting Prophet Mohammed. The locals said he was first beaten and then set on fire. The authorities recovered his charred body. The killing caused considerable outrage in Bangladesh and India.

In the case of Mondal, the police have said the lynching appears to be linked to a dispute over extortion.

Mondal was killed around 11:00 pm at Hosendanga village of Kalimohor union, according to Assistant Superintendent of Police (Pangsha Circle) Debrata Sarkar.

The police rushed to the spot after receiving information about the incident and rescued Mondal in a critical condition, according to Sarkar.

Mondal died while he was being taken for treatment, Sarkar said.

The police have arrested one of Mondal’s alleged associates in the extortion operation, Mohammad Selim, and recovered two firearms from his possession, Sarkar said.
