Around 4–6 terrorists are believed to be hiding in the hills near Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam, where 26 people were killed in a terror attack on civilians, News18 reported, citing sources.
Moreover, a search operation is ongoing to capture them.
On the issue of an intelligence failure, government sources told News18, “General intelligence was available, but an attack like this on tourists is unprecedented. It is like the Akshardham attack, where pilgrims were targeted for the first time.”
Sources said that a complete overhaul of the security protocol is on the cards.
Terrorists opened fire on Tuesday afternoon at a popular tourist spot near Pahalgam in Kashmir, killing 26 people—mostly tourists from other states—in the deadliest attack in the Valley since the 2019 Pulwama blast. Among the dead were two foreigners, from the UAE and Nepal, and two locals, PTI reported, citing officials.
Sources said the attack was likely carried out by 8 to 10 terrorists, with 5 to 7 of them likely from Pakistan.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi returned to New Delhi this morning after cutting short his visit to Saudi Arabia. Soon after landing, he held a briefing at the airport with National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, and Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri to review the situation.
“I strongly condemn the terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. I pray that the injured recover at the earliest. All possible assistance is being provided to those affected,” the Prime Minister said in a post on X earlier.
