Chavez's authority has to be studied in the historical context of Venezuela

Chavez was a great communicator who believed in mass movement and support. His authoritarian stance was meant to break the nexus between the two powerful factions in Venezuela who had decided to loot every resource in the country and hijack every issue in their favour.
