All sorts of excitement is in the air, as it seems that Google has sent out invites for a 29 October Android event. The Verge reports, the invite is for an event in New York and doesn’t give out much specifics, it did say “the playground is open.”
Google is expected to launch the next version of the Nexus at this event. The rumour mills are going crazy over which smartphone maker will be the manufacturer of the next Google phone.
Currently most bets are on LG to be the manufacturer, with reports saying that the new Nexus could very well be its Optimus G device. In fact, images of the LG Optimus G with the Google Nexus branding have got leaked all over the Internet. The first set appeared on the XDA forum but were later removed.
Another leak took place on a Russian forum but these too were deleted later. According to AndroidOS.in , the XDA forum smartphone had the model number E960 and is codenamed Mako. The Mako code-name seems credible as in the past all the Nexus devices have been codenamed after fish names and Mako is a type of Shark.
But LG is not the only contender to be the manufacturer of the next Nexus device. Or not according to the rumour mills anyway. Earlier this week a set of images was leaked on Picasa with a Sony Xperia device being displayed as the Nexus. The backcover of the Sony Xperia has the Google branding.
Earlier in May, the Wall Street Journal had also reported that Google could tie up with more than one manufacturer to launch a bunch of Nexus smartphones.
We don’t know much about those, but given that the Optimus G is the strongest contender for the post, here is a look at some of its key specifications:
The device has a 4.7-inch screen with 1280×768 resolution, True HD and IPS (In Panel Switching), a 13-megapixel autofocus camera and Qualcomm’s quad-core processor, which clocked at 1.5Ghz along with a 2GB RAM.
Come 29 October, we’ll get to see the real Google Nexus smartphone and hopefully it will be more than just one device.
