London: Sony Mobile Communications today announced the launch of the Xperia go and Xperia arc S, which are water resistant and dust proof devices. Both phones are expected to be available globally from the third quarter of 2012.

The Xperia Go has a 3.5" Reality Display, a 5MP fast capture camera, and a 1Ghz dual core processor. Its scratch resistant mineral glass display gives it wet finger tracking capability. The device runs on Android Gingerbread, but is upgradeable to Ice Cream Sandwich.

The Xperia arc S meanwhile is a bigger phone, with a 4.3" screen that comes loaded with full HD video recording, HD video chat, and HDMI TV connectivity. The phone also comes with the Xperia smart tag that allows users to easily open applications with one touch against an Xperia SmartTag.

The arc S also has a 12MP fast capture camera, is PlayStation(TM) Certified and contains a 1.5Ghz dual core processor. The device will launch with Androids Ice Cream Sandwich OS.

In a statement introducing the phones and their water resistance capabilities Sony said, “Industry research demonstrates that consumers consider durability and water resistance as important features when purchasing a smartphone. Also, Xperia acro HD, which has the same durability and water resistance features as Xperia acro S, has been the best selling smartphone in Japan since its launch in March, further demonstrating the appeal of durability and water resistance.”
