Ever wanted to watch a movie at full volume in the dead of night, without getting a earful from your parents or loved ones? How about wanting to play a game late at night with the lights off but without getting entangled in the wiring that you can’t see? Well if you have faced such situations… you know the answer lies in investing in a pair of wireless headphones. However, this is a bit of a problem for anyone who does want a good pair of wireless headphones. The market in India on this front is rather badly divided. Good pair of wireless headphones that offer decent levels of performance, at an affordable price point are quite hard to come by. One either has to settle for a branded major like Sennheiser which costs thousands of rupees or for a “grey market import” from China that has an approximate shelf life of 3 months before it stops functioning.

However a solution finally seems to be at hand. Mitashi recently introduced its MH5001 wireless headphone that it claims is a multi-purpose device and can be used in a variety of scenarios ranging from use with TV and mp3 playback to FM use and even voice chat. Does it live up to this billing? Let’s find out.

One thing Mitashi is never going to win awards for, is its product design. The MH5001 is your very standard black pair of oversized headphones, with literally no innovation or attention having being paid towards increasing the user’s comfort. The leather used for the head-rest area of the headphone and the earphone area is rather hard and didn’t provide a very comfortable fit when i used it. This is however a subjective issue, as other people’s reactions to the headphones ranged from calling them moderately comfortable to outright rejections.

While ergonomically the headset may suffer, in the build quality and finish department the MH5001 is an entirely different matter. The headphone is constructed out of nice sturdy plastic, which sports a good matte finish and gives it the appearance of a far more expensive product. This steady construction also assures that the MH5001 is “squeak- free”, which is just another plus point in favor of this product.

Feature-wise the MH5001 is certainly loaded. Apart it from being a wireless headset, Mitashi has equipped it with an inbuilt FM receiver and has also thoughtfully provided a line-in at the base of the headset itself so it can be used as a wired headset. There is even an inbuilt mic which is useful if you need to use it for voice conversations. All these points combine to really make it an all-in-one solution.

As part of its power requirements, the base and the headset of the MH5001 both use 2 AAA batteries. This may seem like a negative point for some but it’s not. Rechargeable AAA batteries can be had for real cheap and can be easily used quite a few times before they are depleted.

For testing the performance of the MH5001, we simply used it in real life conditions. First up we checked out the headset’s main selling point i.e. its wireless range and ease of use. Here the MH5001 initially gave us a lot of trouble, as it would simply refuse to lock into its base. It took a fair bit of fiddling and switching channels via the headset control before it finally locked in. Once that problem was solved, it was smooth sailing. The wireless range of the 5001 was surprisingly good. We walked all over our test lab area, with it and at no point did it drop the signal. Though there was a bit of interference at times, it was minor and could be easily ignored. In our next test, we checked out the performance of the FM receiver which worked as advertised. The channel pickup was quick, and the quality of audio at par with what a standard mobile with FM is capable of. The audio quality of the MH5001 was another area where it surprised us. It was surprisingly loud and clear with good channel separation and decent bass. In the final part of our tests, we checked out the battery life of the headset. This was yet another surprise. The MH5001 despite being used extensively was able to give over 16 hours of wireless freedom.

The MH5001 at the end of the day is a very good product for its price of Rs. 700 and is available with our partner site HomeShop18 . We took up this product not really expecting too much it, as previous Mitashi efforts have been sorely disappointing. This product just proves that with a little bit of effort, Mitashi can easily make some very good products.
