Xiaomi Redmi 4A could be the phone that's launching in India on 20 March

The Xiaomi Redmi 4A was launched in China on 11 November 2016, for roughly Rs 5,000 in Gold and Rose Gold variants.

The Xiaomi Redmi 4A was launched in China on 11 November 2016, for CNY 599 (approx Rs 6,000) in Gold and Rose Gold variants. The device may be launching in India on 20 March, if we have interpreted the invite correctly.

An invite sent out to the press seems to indicate that a new phone for India is going to be the Redmi 4A, because the letter A in the word "smarter" has been stylised to read as both the number 4 and the letter A. The part of the invite that seems to hint at the Redmi 4A launch in India can be seen below.

The Redmi 4A has a 5 inch IPS LCD screen with a display resolution of 720 x 1280 pixels. The device ships with the Android Marshmallow OS, and is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 chipset with a Quad-core 1.4 GHz Cortex-A53 CPU and an Adreno 308 GPU. There is a 2GB RAM card, and 16 GB of onboard memory with a memory card slot for expanding the capacity. The primary camera images in a 13 MP resolution, and there is a 5 MP selfie shooter on the front. The non removable battery has a capacity of 3,120 mAh, and the device has support for dual SIM cards.

The device looks promising on paper and should sell like hot cakes if it is priced right. Xiaomi is known for selling phones packed with high specifications at throwaway rates, and are one of the most popular companies in the country.

Manu Jain, VP at Xiaomi and Managing Director at Xiaomi India has indicated on Twitter that there will be an additional announcement on 20 March. The tweet confirms that a new device will be launched, and the additional announcement does not seem to be another device, but instead an important milestone in the history of Xiaomi in India. The tweet was received with enthusiasm, congratulations and speculations.

There variants of the Redmi 4 series were launched in China. These were the Redmi 4, the Redmi 4A and the Redmi 4 Prime. It is unclear if the Redmi 4 and the Redmi 4 Prime will be making their way to India yet. The devices are not to be confused with the Redmi Note 4 series, which has the Redmi Note 4 and the Redmi Note 4X. The main difference of the Redmi 4 from the Redmi 4A is the 2.5 D glass on the front, an octa-core Snapdragon 430 SoC and a fingerprint scanner on the back.

There is a 4,100 mAh battery on the Redmi 4, as compared to the 3,120 mAh battery on the Redmi 4A. All the other specifications are the same as the Redmi 4A. The Redmi 4 is available in silver, gold and dark gray. The Redmi 4A is the cheapest of the three models in the Redmi 4 series. The Redmi 4 itself is priced at CNY 699 (around Rs 7,000) in China. The Redmi 4 Prime is even more expensive and is priced at CNY 899 (around Rs 9,000).

The Redmi 4 Prime has a Snapdragon 625 (2.0GHz octa-core) SoC and a 1080p resolution on the five inch screen. All the other specifications including the camera and the battery are identical to the Redmi 4. However, the Redmi 4 Prime has an additional dual LED flash for the primary camera on the back of the device. The Redmi 4 Prime is also available in silver, gold and dark gray, just like the Redmi 4.

In just forty five days after launch of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4, the company claims to have sold over ten lakh devices.
