Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey apologised to Twitter users for accidently making them follow the @POTUS account under Donald Trump. This follower transition was part of a complicated Digital Transition as pointed by Jack in the tweets explaining the problem as reported by Mashabl e. Twitter engineers started looking at the problem as soon as users reported it. The company later fixed the issue owning up the mistake on Twitter.
We believe we've corrected all accounts to reflect your follow/unfollow intent. We're sorry for the mistakes made here, and thank you all.

The interesting thing was that this ‘force follow’ happened for people who had unfollowed the POTUS account before the inauguration to unfollow the @POTUS handle under Trump Administration. This problem was not isolated to one account and occurred with other official accounts like @VP and @PressSec. In fact, the people who followed @POTUS44 , the archive of @POTUS account under Obama administration.
One interesting thing to note is that Dorsey pointed that Obama administration felt that it was only fair to transition accounts with followers intact instead of any old tweets. This shifting or ’transition’ of accounts without any prompt consent from the users was against the policies set by Twitter, and it is good that the problem has been rectified. You can go and follow Barack Obama on his personal account to keep up with his posts.
