Sony has given the public its first peek at a flexible electronic paper, or e-paper, that is made by organic thin film transistors which can be bent to a radius of at least 5mm.

The e-paper is a prototype and uses E Ink Corp’s electrophoretic front plane laminate, while the semi-conductor is made up of Peri-Xanthenoxanthene (PXX). The black and white e-paper has a screen size of 13.3-inches and a pixel size of 1600x1200. The resolution is 150ppi with a contrast ratio of 10:1. The same technology was also used in Sony’s OLED panel which could be bent around a pencil.

The prototype e-paper was shown off at the 49th SID International Symposium, Seminar & Exhibition, which is known to be the world’s biggest conference on display technologies. The new e-paper could be used to replicate books, newspapers as well as other reading media. As always, Sony has declined to comment on both price and in what products we could see this e-paper being used in.
