Samsung is not abandoning the Galaxy Note brand despite the much talked about Samsung Galaxy Note 7 fiasco where batteries were exploding left, right and centre. According to a tweet by a Twitter user Ice Universe, the company is working on the next version of the Note series under the codename ‘Baikal’.
The tweet shows a poster with text strings ‘#THENEXTGALAXY’ and ‘Code name BAIKAL’ on the top. The image shows a frozen landscape photograph by Alexey Trofimov with a Samsung S Pen scribbling ‘8’ on the ice.
The image seems to be sourced from a private Instagram account by the username ‘Galaxylicious’. The Instagram handle mentioned on the poster only has 161 following at the time of writing with no followers and 1 post. The description of the ID says ‘mr.Galaxy’.
Digging a little more, Mr Galaxy can indirectly refer to JK Shin, a top executive with Samsung who was replaced as the Mobile division Chief in late 2015.
One interesting thing to note is that ‘Baikal’ is also a lake in South Siberia. This lake is considered as the oldest and deepest freshwater lake. It may have nothing to do with the actual smartphone or its functionalities as there is nothing official at the time of writing.
