Pandora has introduced a premium subscription service for $9.99 (Roughly Rs 660) a month, and is available only on iOS devices as of now, with plans for a roll out on web and other platforms. The new tier is roughly twice the cost of Pandora Plus, a subscription tier that gets rid of advertisements and allows users to skip more songs. Pandora Premium allows users to search for and play any song available on the service, and uses the Music Genome Project in more creative ways.
The Music Genome Project is an internal database that is an exhaustive map of songs and their attributes. The database is used to identify and deliver songs similar to the ones being listened by the user. All the recently played songs, albums and playlist surface in the My Music menu in the subscription tier. Pandora automatically populates a playlist with similar songs to the ones already played, when a user reaches the end of a playlist.
Pandora Premium also delivers album recommendations based on your listening habits, instead of serving the same bunch of latest new albums to all users. Pandora Premium has a smart offline feature that automatically downloads a local copy of the most listened to tracks, and switches to local playback in the event of a loss of connection. Due to license agreements, Pandora is not available as a service in India. Another web service that tracks plays and delivers recommendations based on what a user has already listened to is Last.fm.
