Light L16: Light publishes production images for this 52MP camera with 16 camera modules

The most interesting thing about Light L16 is that it comes with 16 camera modules on the back and 17 if one wants to count the Infrared sensor that comes along.

Light, a start-up founded in 2013 has published the production-ready design images of L16 on its website. L16, a unique camera ‘phone’ is expected to start shipping on 12 July for the customers in the United States. The most interesting thing about this phone is that it comes with 16 camera modules on the back and 17 if one wants to count the Infrared sensor that is packed along with the sensors. The company secured $30 million Series funding back in July 2016 for the production of Light L16 Camera.

The company has updated the status of the production of the camera in a new article informing the users who pre-ordered the camera last year. Light stopped taking new pre-orders after the initial batch of pre-orders was filled up. The company updated that it is planning to start taking new pre-orders sometime later in the year in the United States after the first batch of devices is shipped out. One thing to note here is that the first batch of L16 Cameras was sold for the pre-ordering price of $1,299.

Light has successfully made several thousand units at the Foxconn production facility in Asia during the DVT build. The cameras have been through rigorous tests to check and fine-tune the build quality of the product. The company has shifted its focus on shipping the product to the field and optimising the performance according to the feedback from the field.

In addition to the product-ready design photos, and manufacturing process, the company also released some sample shots taken with the camera. Light admitted that some issues surfaced during the internal alpha testing and the initial beta testing and it is working on closing the issues that cropped up during that time. The company has expanded its beta program and will begin shipping pre-released L16s to the customers who have volunteered for the beta program.

The L16 camera is built with a die-cast aluminum alloy chassis, rubber grip, 5-inch FHD touch screen, 16 individual camera modules with 5 wide-angle modules at 28 mm focal length and f/2.0 aperture, 5 medium-range camera modules at 70 mm focal length and f/2.0 aperture along with 6 telephoto modules at 150 mm focal length and f/2.4 aperture. All the focal lengths given here are at full frame equivalent and all the sensors shoot images at 13 MP resolution.

The camera will come along with 256 GB internal storage, the capacity to shoot more than 1000 images. The final output of the images will be 52 MP and the camera can shoot images in JPEG, TIFF and DNG file formats.

L16 comes with an ISO range from 100-3200G, a shutter speed ranging from 1/8000th of a second to 15 seconds. You can tap to focus or half-press the shutter to focus and it comes with self-time that gives you an option to shoot an image in 3, 5, 10, or 20 seconds.

It packs automatic or manual exposure of images. L16 is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 along with Light ASIC running Android operating system out of the box. The camera comes with GPS, Bluetooth, USB 3.0 Type-C connector and Wi-Fi as connectivity options and is powered by 3,900 mAh lithium-ion polymer battery. L16 can shoot 4K video at all the focal lengths.
