Google may unveil a Huawei-made Nexus 7 tablet in coming months

We have been seeing plenty of leaks about the upcoming Nexus (or should we say Pixel) smartphones from Google. But there is no news of any tablet, so far and this seems a bit odd because Android 7.0 Nougat does pack in some tablet-friendly features. Well, that is until now, as there’s finally some news about a Nexus 7 tablet successor and it is expected to come from Huawei.

The news comes from tipster Evan Blass who has a credible history of leaks. Still then, this is a ’leak’ so we would request our readers to take this information with a pinch of salt.

The tipster does not give out any information in his tweet apart from the wider details like it will be made by Huawei and that it will arrive by the end of this year. He also tells us that the tablet will feature a 7-inch display and that it packs in 4GB RAM. Blass did mention that the things are “on track” meaning that it should in all probability be announced along with the new Nexus range next month.

While there have been plenty of rumours, the leaks so have been murky at best and the whole Pixel branding story adds to the mess. This is more so for the Nexus smartphones as Google is said to be interested in manufacturing it own products this year. With that in mind, and the Nexus branding out, we assume that Google would churn out high-end premium devices that could be shining examples of Android that would compete with Apple’s iPhones.

With the Nexus branding out, one could also kiss the low prices good bye! Which makes it an even tougher proposition for Google to sell its Nexus tablet in market that barely has any buyers and the sales of which keep dropping from quarter to quarter.

Back in August, the IDC hinted that falling tablet shipments that had taken another hit and fallen by 12.3 percent year-on-year, accounting to 38.7 million total shipments when compared to 44.1 million seen in Q2 2015. Top of the list are companies such as Apple and Samsung, but both have suffered decline in shipments by 9.2 percent and 24.5 percent, respectively. So it would make little sense for Google to have another tablet out, unless all it wants to do is show off how Nougat works on a tablet form-factor.
