According to The Next Web , the announcement could be related to an enhanced or more broadly available Virtual Reality experience.

Google Earth is already available in VR for the HTC Vive . The application was launched on the Steam store in November 2016. Users can explore the planet as a size shifting giant, fly through cities like a bird, or drop to the streets as a normal human being. There are hand picked destinations with cinematic tours. The entire experience could potentially be available through the web on Google Cardboard, to make the Google Earth VR experience more broadly available.

Google has in fact, already introduced a new way to explore Google Earth, through WebVR. Google introduced a VR hub for experimental content that could be consumed through the web, using Google Cardboard or the keyboard and mouse for navigation.

One of these experiences is called “ Speak to Go ” and allows users to explore the planet through voice commands. A Google Creative Labs project, the source code for the entire experiment is available on GitHub .

The WebVR experiences are not yet available on desktop VR headsets such as the HTC Vive or the Oculus Rift, but Google does plan to add the functionality in the future. There is no StreetView integration with the Google Earth VR experience for the HTC Vive yet. This is purely speculation, but Google is positioned to add another incredible feature to Google Earth.

The PSLV-C37 mission by Isro in mid February this year put into orbit 88 satellites from Planet  known as Flock 3p. Combined with the 12 satellites put into orbit on the PSLV-C34 mission in June 2016, the satellites form a “line scanner” constellation that can image the Earth every day. Those logged in to the Planetary Explorer on the Planet web site, can view these daily images . Alphabet Inc, the owner of Google, sold its satellite imaging division Terra Bella, to Planet. The deal included an agreement, according to which,  Google would buy satellite imagery from Planet . Google Earth could start making available daily mosaics of the entire planet.
