You will see a carousel with stories from different publications on any given topic and you can swipe through the list to check the articles. This makes it easier for users to see how different new publications are reporting any given topic. Facebook detailed how the ranking works in the new interface while maintaining that it has not changed from the old interface. The ranking is a combination of engagement around the article on Facebook, engagement around the publisher and other articles that are linking to the article. There is no fixed or pre-defined list of publications that are ‘eligible’ to be a part of the Trending list.

The company is also tweaking the news feed on mobile devices by adding the trending section to make it easier for mobile users to discover new topics. It will start testing a New Feed where people will be about to see top three trending topics on the top. Users can tap on the list to access the full list of trending topics and explore the discussion around those topics. Users will have the option to remove the ‘Trending’ unit from their News Feed using the drop-down menu.
