CES 2015: Dell's Venue 8 7000 tablet with Intel's RealSense snapshot camera unveiled

After giving a glimpse at its new tablet at Intel’s Developer Forum last month, Dell has finally launched the Venue 8 7000. Measuring a mere 6 millimetres in thickness, the Venue 8 7000 claims to be the thinnest tablet in the world and also the first to feature Intel’s Real Sense 3D camera.

Sporting a large 8.4-inch OLED edge-to-edge display with QHD 2,560 x 1,600 pixel resolution, the bezels are said to be narrower than the 7.9-inch iPad mini 3. There’s a set of stereo speakers and two of the tablet’s four cameras on the left. Four cameras might seem excessive, but Dell claims that the extra cameras give the tablet an understanding of how far away the objects are in your photographs and allow you to manipulate them accordingly. It comes armed with an 8MP shooter and 720p stereoscopic sensors form the RealSense Snapshot Depth Camera from Intel. Dell also adds its new photo manager called the Dell Gallery.

The camera aside, the Dell Venue 8 7000 comes powered by a 2.3GHz Intel Atom quad-core processor and 2GB of RAM. It runs Android KitKat 4.4 and upgradable to Android Lollipop. On the storage front, it gets 16GB of onboard storage and a microSD card slot that lets you expand the storage up to 512GB.

“If you want the thinnest Android tablet around, not to mention a beautiful screen and long battery life, Dell’s Venue 8 is worth a look. It just doesn’t convince me that taking photos with a big screen in your face is worth it,” WSJ concludes in its Dell Venue 8 7000 review.

Dell also plans to launch an LTE version of the device soon. Priced at $399, the Dell Venue 8 7000 is currently available in the US and is expected to hit Canada later this week. It is available through Dell.com and Best Buy stores. It is expected to reach other countries including India by early 2015.
