Just when we thought that Apple was sleeping over Siri , its quirky voice assistant, news comes from The Information that the tech giant is planning to launch something big. And it is expected to go official at this year’s WWDC.

Apple is reportedly planning to make Siri available to third-party app developers. It plans to do the same by launching an SDK for Siri at this year’s WWDC. But that’s not all, as Apple has been eyeing Amazon and reportedly plans to launch an Echo-like voice assistant that may operate from a box in your living room.

The news comes hot on the heels of Google’s annual developer conference, where the search giant announced Google Assistant , which combines the power of search and learning, as well as the new Google Home, an Amazon Echo alternative. With Siri’s humour getting a bit dull, it indeed makes a lot more sense to open it up to developers. Still, Apple’s AI efforts seem little in comparison to Google.

In fact, Siri’s development was so slow that its founders left Apple built their own AI alternative called Viv. Viv, unlike Siri and Cortana, is a digital assistant that generates and executes code on the fly. Viv writes its own program in real time to provide a more natural voice interface. It can write a program within 10 milliseconds by a process known as dynamic program generation, which is a computer science breakthrough. Let’s just hope Apple comes prepared.
