Apple could run into trouble in China over 'iWatch' trademark

Even while Apple has run to trademark the name “iWatch” in Japan and Mexico, it is about to run into some trouble as far as applying for a trademark in China goes. The problem is bound to occur thanks to the fact that “iWatch” has already been registered in the country previously and so has “iWatching”.

According to a report by Beijing News , a whopping nine companies have currently registered for the iWatch trademark. Three of these companies classify their products in the category of watches and other computer peripherals.

The report also noted that three of these “iWatch” trademarks are currently in the inactive mode. Any company or individual can now jump into the fray and apply for the trademark now. While it seems like a great time for Apple to throw its hat into the ring as far as China is concerned, it faces stiff competition from other applicants in the country.

There is also the issue of a trademark owned by a Taiwanese company named Chowsons International in 2006 called “iWatching”. The company holds trademark to the name till 2020 under various classifications. While most of these are related to CCTV surveillance or home security, one of the classifications pertain to “computer peripheral” too. Thanks to the similarity between iWatch and iWatching, Apple could face a roadblock while applying for a trademark in China.

Apple seems to be rolling full-steam ahead to ensure its rumoured wearable device gets a smooth launch. It was reported in February that a 100-person team of product designers had been working on the wristwatch-like device. Apple has also filed a patent with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for a slap-on bracelet like device that could well be the iWatch. It will also have a full-length, flexible touch screen.

Recently, CEO Tim Cook even dropped major hints about Apple venturing into the “profound” world of wearables. Now that trademarks have been filed in a couple of countries, it could be safe to assume that the iWatch is coming soon.
