Ubisoft Motion Pictures has announced a movie called The Division to be directed by Stephen Gaghan. The movie is an adaptation of Tom Clancy’s The Division, Ubisoft’s best selling game. The game sold more titles in its first twenty four hours than any other game in the history of Ubisoft, and recorded the biggest first week of a new video game franchise. Tom Clancy’s The Division is a third person open world multiplayer only title set in a mid-apocalyptic New York City in the aftermath of a smallpox pandemic.
Gerard Guillemot, Chief Executive Officer, Ubisoft Motion Pictures said “We are really excited to bring Stephen’s unique vision of the game to film audiences around the globe.” Matt Phelps, Vice President and Head of Development, Ubisoft Motion Pictures said “We can’t wait for Stephen’s remarkable passion and talent to bring the astonishing world of The Division to life.”
Stephan Gaghan said “I’m excited to work with Ubisoft Motion Pictures and collaborate with their team at Massive Entertainment to bring The Division to the big screen, they’re great guys, exceptionally creative, and willing to take risks. The game has been an enormous success, in large part due to the visual landscape they created, their vision of a mid-apocalyptic Manhattan. It’s immersive, wonderfully strange, and yet familiar, filled with possibilities.”
Stephen Gaghan will write and direct the film. Gaghan has won an Academy Award for writing Traffic, and was nominated for Syriana, which he wrote and directed. Jake Gyllenhaal and Jessica Chastain, both Academy Award nominees, will star in the project. Ubisoft will co-produce the film along with Nine Stories Productions and Freckle Films. Ubisoft Motion Pictures has released one movie so far, Assasin’s Creed.
Apart from The Division, Ubisoft Motion Pictures has a number of movie adaptations in the pipeline. Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell, Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon, Watchdogs, Rabbids and Far Cry are all getting movie adaptations. Ubisoft Motion Pictures is also making a sequel to Assasin’s Creed, Assasin’s Creed 2.
