Apple today announced that customers have downloaded over 50 billion apps from its App Store for iOS devices. The company said that customers are downloading more than 800 apps per second.

Apple today announced that its customers have downloaded over 50 billion apps from its App Store for iOS devices.

The company said that customers are downloading more than 800 apps per second at a rate of over two billion apps per month.

The 50 billionth app was Say the Same Thing by Space Inch which was downloaded by Brandon Ashmore from Mentor, Ohio who is also the lucky winner of $10,000 App Store Gift Card to commemorate this historic milestone.

The 50 billion downloads represents unique downloads and excludes re-downloads and updates. Apple is just ahead of Google Play Store, which reported 48 billion downloads. Google had showcased the numbers at its on-going Google I/O conference.

The App Store was launched in July 2008 with 500 apps and now offers over 850,000 apps for iPhones and iPads of which 350,000 are native iPad apps.
