Virender Sehwag issues clarification on Twitter, says Gurmehar Kaur has right to express her views

Former India batsman Virender Sehwag, whose tweet 'trolling' Delhi University student Gurmehar Kaur triggered an outrage on social media, responded to the controversy, saying his tweet was not a case of agreement or disagreement with anyone and everyone has a right to express his/her opinion.

On Wednesday, Sehwag again took to the micro-blogging website to issue a clarification after facing backlash over his "I did not score two triple centuries. My bat did" placard that he had posted on Sunday.

“My tweet was (an) attempt to be facetious rather than one to bully anyone over their opinion. Agreement or disagreement wasn’t even (a) factor,” he said.

"She has a right to express her views and anyone who threatens her with violence or rape is the lowest form of life," he added.

"Everyone has a right to express their views without being bullied or threatened. Gurmehar Kaur or the Phogat sisters," Sehwag posted on Twitter.

Kaur, 20, had started the campaign #StudentsAgainstABVP, following the violence at Delhi University's Ramjas College where students and teachers clashed with Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) members. The campaign went viral and received massive support from students of various universities.

Kaur had changed her Facebook profile picture to one with her holding a placard that says, “I am a student of Delhi University. I am not afraid of ABVP. I am not alone. Every student of India is with me. #fightbackdu #studentsagainstabvp”.

The English literature student's classmates and peers started sharing the post, prompting students from various universities across the country to change their profile pictures with similar placards.

However, Kaur withdrew from her social media campaign after allegedly receiving rape threats from the members of the RSS-backed student outfit.
