Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi continue to fight on. The last date for submissions has come and gone but still the duo continue to fight – through their dads, through silence, through arrogance.
“I haven’t come across something like this ever. There have been punch-ups, incidents where players have run behind each other with stumps in their hands. But nothing like this,” said senior sports writer Ayaz Memon. “In my opinion, there was a complete absence of honour and trust in their personal dealings. What is even more galling is that not one of the selectors, all senior figures, has had the guts to say that I don’t like what is happening and I am quitting.”
And this is what is happening in tennis – which is one of the better known sports in India. Imagine what is really happening in other sports like judo, cycling and maybe even wrestling or shooting. In essence, the entire fracas is a window into the world of sports administration in India. It also makes you realise that the BCCI are actually doing a pretty decent job with cricket.
“The BCCI have problems but you have to give credit where it is due. There are so many politicians, so many more players, so much more money is involved and yet, it’s doing pretty well. The AITA can learn from there,” Ayaz further added.
