Reacting to the gruesome murder of tennis player Radhika Yadav which has left the entire India shocked, Neeraj Chopra said that family members must support female athletes.

India’s most successful Olympian, Neeraj Chopra, has called on families to support female athletes in the wake of the gruesome murder of Haryana tennis player Radhika Yadav . The 25-year-old was reportedly shot dead by her father over a disagreement related to her tennis academy.

The tragic murder of Radhika took place in Haryana’s Gurugram on Thursday. Her father, Deepak Yadav, has reportedly confessed to the murder during initial questioning.

Neeraj Chopra says female athletes should be ‘idolised’

Neeraj Chopra, who has won two Olympic medals including a gold, cited examples of successful female athletes from Haryana and urged families to support one another to prevent such unfortunate incidents.

“I was speaking to a few people about this before. We already have some excellent examples of female athletes from Haryana doing wonders for the country. In families, you should support each other, and those (women athletes) who are doing well should be idolised and followed,” Neeraj told NDTV.

As per the reports, Deepak was having a disagreement with her daughter Radhika over the tennis academy she was running. Deepak wanted Radhika to shut down the academy as people in his locality regularly taunted him for depending on his daughter’s income.

On Thursday, Deepak fired multiple shots at Radhika from his licensed .32 bore revolver after an argument, leading to her death.

“Her father shot her dead. He has been arrested by the Police and, upon questioning, he confessed to the crime,” Sandeep Kumar, Gurugram Police PRO was quoted as saying by the news agency ANI.

“The accused, Deepak, is around 49 years old. In a prima facie investigation, it has been found that the deceased ran a Tennis academy, due to which her father was upset. He had told her several times not to run the academy.

“He shot her dead over this. The deceased was a national-level player. The licensed weapon used to commit the crime has been seized. Further investigation is being done,” the police added.
