The eighth season of Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy will begin on 12 February at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. After BCCI’s revamp of the tournament, the 2016–17 season will be played in an inter-zonal format wherein five zones (South, North, East, Central and West) will compete in a round-robin tournament. Earlier, it was played between 27 teams divided into four groups.

To reach the main inter-zonal event, each of the five zones played independent T20 tournaments among themselves from 29 January to 6 February 2017 which was hosted at various venues like Baroda (West), Chennai (South), Dharamsala (North), Jaipur (Central) and Kolkata (East).

The zonal selectors have already announced their respective squads for the tournament.

The Harbhajan Singh-led North Zone consists a total of 11 international-level cricketers, featuring Gautam Gambhir, Shikhar Dhawan, Yuvraj Singh, Mandeep Singh, Ashish Nehra, Rishabh Pant and newcomer Parvez Rasool.

Suresh Raina has been handed the responsibility of the Central Zone alongside Ambati Rayudu and Naman Ojha.

Elsewhere, Vinay Kumar has been named the captain of South Zone squad that looks like a blend of young guns and veterans. After impressing many in the South Zone T20 tournament, Basil Thampi and Vishnu Vinod were picked for the main event.

With a handful of players who featured in the recently-concluded ODI series against England, the Parthiv Patel-led West Zone hope Kedar Jadhav can fill the void after Rohit Sharma was ruled out with a thigh injury.
