Pandya: Pretty important to come back and bowl in the right areas. Bowled pretty at the start, but they were scoring boundaries as well. The new ball will do something. The ball will stop swinging, and then you can play easily. Did my training in NCA and came back pretty strongly. Groundsman said dew does come here, and we have a good contest coming up.

Woakes squeezes a boundary off Bhuvneshwar. But there is a  mix up and Woakes sacrifices his wicket for Stokes with two balls to go. He is run out. England 319/7. Plunkett is the new man in. Woakes goes on the offensive. Cracks a six and two fours off Bumrah. England goes past 300. This is a very formidable score at Eden Gardens.

Bhuvneshwar have managed to keep the scoring down in the first three balls, but then bowls wide outside the off stump and Stokes slashes at it and sends the ball to the third man fence. With that he brings up his fifty.

Woakes edges a Bumrah delivery, but a fine piece of fielding by Bhuvneshwar at the third man fence saves a certain boundary. Stokes then flicks one, but Jadeja fields well. Bumrah beats Stokes on the last ball.

Fourteen runs off that over – the best of the England innings. Stokes looks to have edged a ball, there is a huge appeal, and the umpires go upstairs. But replays show the ball to have dropped in front of Dhoni.

Stokes goes after Bumrah and gets a boundary at fine leg. He is shaping up to hit the big shots now. England need some big boundaries with five overs to go.

Woakes opens his account with a boundary and brings up England’s 250. Pandya completes his quota of 10 overs, going for 49 runs and taking three wickets.

Moeen Ali pulls Bumrah. The ball hits his bat, then the helmet and pops up for Jadeja to complete an easy catch at backward point. Jadeja had dropped Moeen at a very important stage at Cuttack, and is evidently relieved. Woakes is the new man in.

OUT! Bairstow hits a widish delivery from Pandya straight to Jadeja at backward point. England lose their fifth wicket for 237. A good catch diving forward by him. A good hand by Bairstow nevertheless. Moeen Ali walks in as the next batsman.

Ashwin starts the third power play and is immediately lofted into the stands by Stokes. Ten runs of that over.

England 225/4 after 40 overs (Stokes 7, Bairstow 53) 

Stokes cracks a boundary square on the off side. The big all-rounder would want to hit some lusty blows in the last few overs.

England 220/4 after 39 overs (Stokes 2, Bairstow 53) 

Bairstow goes to his fifty with a four at third man. He came into the side in place of Joe Root and has make it count.

England 212/4 after 38 overs (Bairstow 41) 

Pandya is bowling really well now. He really troubled the batsmen in his previous over and beats the batsman on the first ball. Buttler tries to guide the ball towards third man then, but Kohli fields well.

Big appeal for caught behind against Bairstow. Out given by the on-field umpire. Bairstow reviews and gets a decision in his favour.

Buttler goes over the top off Ashwin towards deep mid-wicket. There is a fielder posted there, but the ball drops short. Bairstow then sweeps Ashwin for a boundary.

Pandya beats the batsman with short-pitched deliveries. A tidy over – just one runs off that over.

200 up for England with a streaky boundary by Buttler off Jadeja. The ball is gripping the surface. Meanwhile, Pandya effects an acrobatic save

Pandya into the attack now. India will need to break this partnership, otherwise they could well be looking at the score over 320. Twenty fours and five sixes in the England innings so far. 

But India get lucky. Morgan, who was looking so good, hits one straight to Bumrah at 45 degree on the leg side. He goes for a well-made 43 off 44 balls. England lose their third wicket for 194 in the 34th over. A wicket against the run of play off a delivery that didn’t deserve a wicket really. And it’s drinks.

Morgan goes big again. Deposits Ashwin into the crowd over wide long on. Both batsmen approaching their fifties. This has been a tremendous counter attack by England after losing Billings and Roy close to each other.

Jadeja goes for runs in this over. First Bairstow lofts him over extra cover for a four and Morgan then goes straight over the top of the bowler’s head for a six. Thirteen runs off that over.

Morgan dances down the track, converts Ashwin’s delivery into a low full toss and gets a boundary. The England captain has got back into form and looks ominous for India.

Big appeal for LBW against Morgan on the first ball of Bumrah’s over. Not out given on the field. India go for a review. Replays suggest the bounce would have saved the batsman. The on field decision stays. Was Kohli a bit rash in going for the review? It looked from Dhoni’s expression that he was surprised at the call for review.

OH NO! On the fourth ball, Bairstow hits the ball straight down the throat of third man, but it’s a no ball. Bairstow gets a life and it is a free hit. What a blunder by Bumrah. Would Bairstow make India pay for this now?  

The free hit ball is a juicy full toss and Morgan deposits it into the crowd at fine leg. A terrible over so far for India this one.

England bring up their 150 with a fine cut boundary by Bairstow. Desperate dive by the fielder on the third man fence goes to no avail.

Bumrah back into the attack, and he is desperately unlucky as Morgan comes down the track and gets and inside edge. The ball misses the stumps but could well have gone on to hit them. He beats the batsman outside the off too.

Bairstow comes down the track and lofts Jadeja over long off for a six. He had been in sparkling form in the Test series and England will need him big time now. Morgan plays a cheeky scoop for a couple. Sloppy fielding by Bumrah though. The second run could have been avoided.

Jadeja into the attack now. Roy cracks one straight over the bowlers head for a six and gets to his fifty.

England 80/0 after 15 overs

Billings gets a boundary on the second ball, but survives a strong LBW appeal. Kohli asks Dhoni whether to review, but he says no.

England 73/0 after 14 over (Roy 37, Billings 24)

Bumrah into the attack. A brilliant diving save by Pandya at mid-on saves a certain boundary. The next ball climbs up and beats the hook attempted by Billings . Dhoni makes a good stop. Bye given. Roy then gets an inside edge, but he ball misses the stumps by inches. Lucky for the batsman.

England 62/0 after 13 over (Roy 37, Billings 24)

Spin introduced for the first time by Kohli, and it’s Yuvraj into the attack now. He may not get a lot of turn, but can keep the scores down with accurate wicket-to-wicket bowling. Yuvraj gets hit to point on the last ball, but a lightning quick Jadeja saves the boundary.

England 57/0 after 12 over (Roy 35, Billings 21)

The England openers quietly play that over from Bumrah away. Bumrah has bowled well so far, and the England batsmen should be wary against him.

England 53/0 after 11 over (Roy 33, Billings 19)

Pandya changes ends and replaces Bhuvneshwar now. The first ball keeps a bit low and beats Roy, who comes back with a fine off-driven boundary on the third ball of the over. Roy dismisses Pandya to the mid-wicket fence on the last ball. Fifty run partnership up between Roy and Billings.

England 43/0 after 10 over (Roy 28, Billings 14)

Bumrah comes for his second over and beats Billings. The batsman gets a boundary, but is beaten with a beauty on the last ball again. This is now the best opening stand of the series from either side.

England 39/0 after 9 over (Roy 28, Billings 10)

The first four balls of the next over are dot balls. Eleven balls without a run now. And Roy charges down the track and blasts Bhuvneshwar over extra cover. He doesn’t time it as well as he would have liked, but the ball trickles to the fence. That will break thye shackles. He turns the ball through mid-wicket next, but a good fielding at the fence denies him a boundary.

England 33/0 after 8 over (Roy 22, Billings 10)

Jasprit Bumrah brought into the attack in place of Pandya and he beats Billings comprehensively outside the off stump in the first three balls. On the fourth ball, he edges, but the ball falls short of the slip fielder. Billings is beatan again on the last ball. Bumrah bowls a maiden, but is desperately unlucky.

England 33/0 after 7 over (Roy 22, Billings 10)

Bhuvneshwar bowls a tight over. Only one run coming off it. The Indians have bowled with heart, but have been a bit unlucky so far.

England 32/0 after 6 over (Roy 22, Billings 9)

Pandya beats both Billings and Roy outside off-stump, but then Roy comes up with a fine off-driven boundary. The England batsmen have been beaten a number of times, but what they have done well in the initial phase is that they have not missed to pick up boindaries when they have had a chance.

England 27/0 after 5 overs (Roy 18, Billings 8)

Roy cuts Bhuvneshwar over point for a boundary and clips one off his legs, which races to the fence on a lightning quick Eden outfield.

England 19/0 after 4 overs (Roy 10, Billings 8)

Roy hits Pandya for two boundaries in the over, and Billings hits one of his own. Thirteen runs off that over. England are going on the attack.

England 6/0 after 3 overs (Roy 5, Billings 0)

Roy shuffles outside off-stump and clips Bhuvi off his pads for England’s first boundary towards square leg. Nasser Hussein on commentary finds similarities with Kevin Peitersen. Roy gets beaten outside off.

England 1/0 after 2 overs (Roy 0, Billings 0)

Pandya shares the new ball with Bhuvneshwar. Beats Billing all ends up with a delightful away-swinger on the fourth ball and Kohli posts three slips again. Billings tries to counter by walking a few steps down the track on the next ball, but it is not easy to get Pandya away.

England 1/0 after 1 overs (Roy 0, Billings 0)

Bhuvneshwar starts with two out-swingers, followed by a ball coming in. He gets good carry on the fourth delivery, and beats Roy outside off. Kohli goes on the attack and posts three slips. A last delivery is a gem, squaring Roy up and  beating the outside edge off his bat. The Eden pitch certainly has something for the bowlers early on.

And we are away as Roy leaves the first delivery outside off.

Jason Roy and Sam Billings are out to open the batting for England and Bhuvneshwar Kumar has the new ball for India.

The two teams are walking out to the middle at the iconic Eden Gardens and we are ready for the national anthems.

A good toss to win for India, considering the dew factor at the Eden Gardens at this time of the year.

Eoin Morgan says there is more grass than ever on a Kolkata wicket. Says England’s batters have done well, but bowlers haven’t hit the straps.

Pitch report: One of the best pitches at the Eden Gardens. There is a fair sprinkling of grass. Seam bowlers might get the ball to move once the dew sets in. The team that wins the toss usually goes for chase, though they might want to bat first this time.
