Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour Weissenhaus LIVE: The 2025 Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour finally comes to life with the first of five events getting underway at the Weissenhaus Private Nature Luxury Resort in Germany on Friday. Some of the biggest names in chess will be competing in the opening event of the tour that is set to run for a week at the resort located along the Baltic coast. That includes reigning world champion D Gukesh and world No 1 Magnus Carlsen, the co-founder of the tour as well as the Freestyle Chess Players Club.
It is at Weissenhaus where Gukesh and five-time world champion Carlsen will lock horns for the first time since the former defeated Ding Liren in Singapore in December to be crowned the 18th and the youngest chess world champion.
And even though there are several other stars competing at the event including Hikaru Nakamura and Fabiano Caruana, it is the showdown between Gukesh and Carlsen that might just be the most eagerly awaited battle of them all.
Indian chess legend Viswanathan Anand was also supposed to compete at the Weissenhaus event, which would have led to a showdown with his protege Gukesh. The five-time world champion, however, withdrew from the tournament at a time when world governing body FIDE, of which he’s the deputy president, was engaged in a war of words with Freestyle Chess.
