Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour Weissenhaus Day 3 LIVE: D Gukesh is set for a pitched battle with Fabiano Caruana as the opening event of the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour in Weissenhaus, Germany enters the knockouts stage. In the other quarter-final line-ups, Alireza Firouza and Javokhir Sindarov, who finished as the joint-leaders in the Round-Robin stage on Friday and Saturday, take on Vincent Keymer and Hikaru Nakamura respectively.
Magnus Carlsen, who helped co-create the tour as well as the Freestyle Chess Players Club, will be up against Nodirbek Abdusattorov.
While he had begun the year with a positive display at the Tata Steel Chess Tournament where he had finished as the joint-leader with R Praggnanandhaa before losing to his compatriots in the tie-breaks, Gukesh’s run in the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour has been far from ideal so far.
The reigning world champion had collected four draws and a 27-move defeat against Firouzja on Friday, Day 1 of the opening tournament at the Weissenhaus Private Nature Luxury Resort. Gukesh would then begin Day 2 with a hat-trick of draws, which included a narrow escape against Caruana, before losing to Carlsen in his first meeting with the world No 1 since being crowned world champion in December.
Gukesh, however, managed to finish at the brink of the qualification zone with 3.5 points courtesy seven draws as Vladimir Fedoseev and Levon Aronian were eliminated from the knockouts after finishing ninth and 10th respectively on the leaderboard.
