Ruben Amorim was sacked by Manchester United on Monday, two days after the Red Devils were held to a 1-1 draw by Leeds United away from home, bringing his reign as manager to an abrupt reign after 14 months.

Manchester United fired Ruben Amorim as manager on Monday, the 40-year-old lasting just 14 months in the role after succeeding Erik ten Hag. The sudden decision to removed the Portuguese manager comes as a surprise since United appeared to have made progress after their shocking 15th-place finish at the end of the previous season.

While United haven’t quite been able to establish themselves among the top-four this season, they have been consistently challenging for a UEFA Champions League berth and currently are sixth on the Premier League table with 31 points.

The steady progress, however, might not have been enough for the Old Trafford hierarchy, which had spent well over £200 million on summer transfers. Additionally, Amorim’s exit as United coach also follows an explosive press conference in Leeds in which the former Sporting CP boss claimed he deserved more power and authority than what was being granted to him.

Amorim’s sudden exit leaves football world divided

United’s decision, meanwhile, has raised eyebrows across the English football community with some of their fans claiming Amorim deserved more time at the club in order to fulfill their goal of returning to European football. Others, however, backed the club’s decision citing his poor win percentage of 38, adding that the decision should have come much earlier instead of January.

The latest firing continues the trend of managers not lasting three full seasons at United following legendary manager Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013. Here are some of the reactions to Amorim’s abrupt exit from Old Trafford:

Ruben Amorim talks too much. Jason Wilcox talks too little. Manchester United fans deserve more clarity and accountability from their club. Club knew he played 3-4-3, which wasn’t suited to United’s identity or squad. This is on the club as much as Amorim.

He’s out of his…

No matter what happens — even if it gets that bad and we’re fighting relegation 😭💔
I’ll still stand by Rúben Amorim 🩸🔴 pic.twitter.com/lVNNaQVhhd

I actually thought the performance against Leeds yesterday was decent enough compared to the many other shambolic games of the Amorim era.

That sacking was on Amorim calling out the folk above him, not a good look for INEOS when they seemingly couldn’t identify the issues at…

Ruben Amorim could have gone at multiple points over the last year. A historic low league finish, Spurs, Grimsby. That he’s been sacked for mouthing off in a presser with Utd in the CL mix says a lot about how muddled the club’s board are.

— Alex Shaw (@AlexShawTel) January 5, 2026

Sacking Ruben Amorim was the most no brainer decision in the history of no brainer decisions. In fact the only surprise is it took this long.

I can’t even fathom how Man United fans can be upset or even shocked at this morning’s news.

Rubén Amorim abandoned all the key principles and pillars on which Manchester United identify themselves - playing with width, taking risks, prioritising academy players - and delivered the club's worst results in over half a century.

— Colin Millar (@Millar_Colin) January 5, 2026

Everyone should apologize to Erik ten Hag. Two trophies in two seasons with Manchester United. He did a lot better than Ruben Amorim.

Amorim couldn’t even beat Wolves, Leeds United, Bournemouth, and West Ham. Ten Hag beat Barcelona and Liverpool, and in the FA Cup final he…

Hard to describe that Amorim experiment as anything other than a massive flop, not least for those who orchestrated it above him, who deserve major scrutiny, but there is a saving grace in the league being open this season and the campaign being salvageable.
