Ruben Amorim says Manchester United had to 'suffer' in 1-0 win over Newcastle: 'It was a good win but...'

Manchester United got their first home win in two months as the Red Devils got the better of Newcastle at the Old Trafford on Friday in the Premier League. United head coach Ruben Amorim though admitted that his side was lucky to get all three points from the match.

Patrick Dorgu scored his first goal for United to push the Red Devils ahead in the 24th minute. After a promising first half, the Red Devils were forced to defend for almost the entirety of the second period.

However, Amorim’s men managed to withstand the pressure from Newcastle and registered their eighth win in the league.

Amorim says United ‘suffered’ despite win

United were missing their injured captain Bruno Fernandes and the duo of Bryan Mbeumo and Amad Diallo due to the Africa Cup of Nations. Amorim’s under-strength side put up a impressive fight to ensure that they take away all three points.

“We had to suffer all together in the stadium,” said Amorim after United’s victory. “We did a good first half and then the second half we just had to defend and try to do something (going forward).”

“It was a good win but I had so many games here saying we played really well and didn’t get the three points. Today was the opposite, we suffered together and managed to win the game,” Amorim added.

Dorgu’s maiden goal sets up United win

Amorim’s change of role for Dorgu paid dividends as he scored his first Manchester United goal to propel Red Devils to fifth in the Premier League.

The Danish international connected sweetly with a looping ball on his left foot for the only goal to compound Newcastle’s miserable away form despite the visitors dominating the second half.

A first home win in two months takes United level on points with fourth-placed Chelsea, while Newcastle remain down in 11th.
