Defending shield champions Mohun Bagan Super Giant face arch-nemesis East Bengal FC less than 24 hours from now in what many would consider the biggest match of the 2024-25 Indian Super League (ISL) season so far. The rivalry between Mohun Bagan and East Bengal, after all, occupies a special place in Indian football with two Kolkata giants having competed in various competitions for more than a century now.
The two teams, however, have had contrasting campaigns so far in the 11th season of what currently is the top division of Indian football. The ‘Mariners’, who had won the League Winners Shield last season and finished runners-up in the Cup final against Mumbai City FC, currently sitting at the fourth spot with two wins and a draw in four outings.
The ‘Red and Gold Brigade’, on the other hand, have had a forgettable season so far with four defeats in as many outings, which led to coach Carles Cuadrat parting ways with the club and getting replaced by Oscar Bruzon .
The upcoming clash between East Bengal and Mohun Bagan, however, won’t be the first match of the season between two Kolkata-based clubs, with Mohammedan Sporting Club having made their ISL debut this season.
