The ‘Cristiano Ronaldo vs Lionel Messi’ debate has been raging on for more than a decade now, and continues to leave the football community divided despite the two icons of the game currently in the twilight of their legendary careers.

Ask the superstar themselves, however, and they’ll offer contrasting replies which also reflect their personalities. Messi chose to stay humble when asked for his opinion on his rivalry with Ronaldo, which was at its peak when they were representing Barcelona and Real Madrid respectively in LaLiga.

Ronaldo, however, made it clear he had no intention of showing any such humility. In a chat with eminent journalist and television presenter Piers Morgan, the Al-Nassr mega star made it clear that he sees himself as the world’s greatest footballer.

“People say Messi is better than you, what do you think?” asked Morgan.

“Messi better than me? I don’t agree with that opinion. I don’t want to be humble,” Ronaldo confidently replied.

Ronaldo clarifies billionaire status

In the latest episode of Piers Morgan Uncensored, Ronaldo was also quizzed on reports of having becoming the first ever billionaire athlete just recently. The 40-year-old, however, partly dismissed the claim, stating that he had achieved that status “many years ago”.

“That’s not true — I became a billionaire many years ago,” he added during the conversation.

The conversation marks the second time Morgan has interviewed Ronaldo; the last time these two appeared in front of a camera in late 2022, CR7 had made explosive allegations against Manchester United that led to his second stint with the iconic Premier League club coming to a swift end.

While Ronaldo currently plays for Saudi Pro League club Al-Nassr, Messi is the face of Major League Soccer (MLS) club Inter Miami – having joined the club co-founded by David Beckham less than a year after helping Argentina win the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Both Messi and Ronaldo are expected to call time on their careers – for their national teams at the very least – after the conclusion of the upcoming World Cup, which takes place in US, Mexico and Canada next summer.
