President Donald Trump responded to Republican setbacks in off-year elections across the United States on, pointing to two main reasons for the losses. He cited unnamed pollsters who claimed that the ongoing government shutdown and his absence from the ballot were decisive factors.
“TRUMP WASN’T ON THE BALLOT, AND SHUTDOWN, WERE THE TWO REASONS THAT REPUBLICANS LOST ELECTIONS TONIGHT,” according to Pollsters.
Democrats gain ground in key contests
New Yorkers elected 34-year-old leftist Zohran Mamdani as their next mayor on Tuesday, while Democrats secured two crucial governor races, sending an early warning to President Donald Trump ahead of the 2026 midterms.
The Democratic clean sweep across top contests nationwide is expected to lift morale within the party, which has faced sustained political pressure since Trump’s return to the White House. Meanwhile, the outcome has triggered concern within Republican ranks.
Mamdani’s win came despite strong criticism of his policies and Muslim background from Trump, business leaders, and conservative media outlets. The Democratic victories in Virginia and New Jersey signalled a possible shift in the national political mood as the country heads toward next year’s midterm elections, where control of Congress will be at stake.
Abigail Spanberger and Mikie Sherrill scored decisive wins in the Virginia and New Jersey gubernatorial races, in elections widely viewed as a referendum on Donald Trump’s second term in office.
Trump has driven a steamroller through the federal bureaucracy since returning to office in January, shuttering entire agencies and cutting an estimated 200,000 jobs even before the government shutdown.
