In a game marred by questionable referee calls, Chelsea got the better of city rivals Fulham 2-0 at Stamford Bridge. Joao Pedro (45+9) and Enzo Fernandez (56) netted a goal apiece for the team. Despite the clean sheet, the Blues suffered a massive setback.
Chelsea’s new signing Liam Delap has sustained a hamstring injury in the initial minutes of the game. He was immediately substituted by Tyrique George and will likely remain out for several weeks. This has created a shortage of forwards in the team, and as a result, Chelsea are reportedly set to back out of loaning Nicolas Jackson to Bayern Munich.
Enzo Meresca’s thoughts on Liam Delap’s injury
Speaking after the match, head coach Enzo Maresca expressed his desire to add another forward, stating that relying solely on Pedro up front would not be sufficient.
“The injury doesn’t look good,” Maresca said. “He was full speed, hamstring. It requires weeks. In terms of another striker, we just finished the game. Now we will see if we take any decisions. When you have two strikers, it’s enough. When one is injured, it is probably not enough."
Nicolas Jackson to Bayern reportedly cancelled
David Ornstein of The Athletic has reported that Chelsea have informed Bayern Munich that they will not proceed with Nicolas Jackson’s loan move.
Bayern had reportedly agreed to a €15 million loan fee and a €65 million purchase option for the Senegal international, but Chelsea have reportedly requested that Jackson return to London to replace Delap.
Nicolas Jackson has spent two seasons at Stamford Bridge so far. He has produced decent numbers, but his place in the team was often debated during the 2024/25 season. He has scored 24 goals for Chelsea in the Premier League across the two seasons.
A failure to meet expectations last season prompted Chelsea to invite takers for him in the current transfer window, and in due course, Bayern Munich came looking for the services of the player. However, with Delap injured, Jackson could make a U-turn to West London.
