Magnus Carlsen is back in controversy after a video showing him shoving away a cameraman went viral on Saturday after a loss in the ongoing FIDE World Rapid Championship 2025. The Norwegian world number one blundered under time pressure against Russian Grandmaster Vladislav Artemiev to taste a rare defeat.
Carlsen blundered in the seventh round to suffer his first loss of the tournament. It was a tense encounter before Carlsen made a huge mistake under time pressure. Carlsen could have agreed to draw the game earlier but he pushed further only to lose. After resigning and shaking hands, Carlsen quickly picked up his blazer and walked away from the board in visible frustration.
As Carlsen was leaving the hall, a FIDE cameraman moved in to take a close-up shot. However, an upset Carlsen pushed the camera aside and continued walking out.
FIDE explains context behind Carlsen’s reaction
Carlsen is known for his mercurial reactions, especially after losing matches. A video of him slamming the table in frustration after losing to world champion D Gukesh had made waves on the Internet some time back.
Similar frustration was visible on Saturday as he stormed back after losing against Artemiev.
Speaking to ChessBase India, a FIDE reporter, alongside the cameraman who was shoved, explained the context behind Carlsen’s reaction.
“Magnus’ whole body is emotions after a chess game and we understand that. He said that he is irritated by himself that he did not take the draw that Artemiev offered,” the reporter who talked to the Norwegian said.
“It’s okay that he played two good games after a horrific start. It’s okay,” the reporter added.
The cameraman, who called the video a “million-dollar shot,” too was in good spirits as he returned to cover the other games of Carlsen.
Carlsen went on to defeat Shant Sargsyan and Ray Robson after his defeat to take the number three position, alongside three more competitors, with 7 points in 9 rounds. Artemiev and Hans Niemenn were at the top with 7.5 points for both.
