Thulasimathi Murugesan became India's 11th medallist at the ongoing Paralympic Games in Paris on Monday after losing her gold medal match against China’s Yang Qiuxia in the women’s singles SU5 category, winning silver as a result.

The Asian Games gold medallist had earlier registered a hard-fought victory over Manisha Ramadass in an all-Indian semi-final late on Sunday. Quixia, however, proved to be too tough an opponent in the gold medal match the following day as she triumphed in straight games (21-17, 21-10).
Thulasi’s medal is the fourth silver India have won at the Paris Games as well as the 11th medal overall.
Who is Thulasimathi Murugesan?
Thulasi was born on 11 April, 2002 in Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu, and took up sport at an early age, getting into athletics at just five years of age and badminton a couple of years later.
This despite facing the challenge of a congenital deformity in her left hand that resulted in the loss of a thumb as well as chronic ulnar neuritis, and muscle atrophy. Her condition was worsened by an accident that caused a severe injury, further limiting mobility on her left hand in terms of both extension and flexion.
