After strongly backing former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh after a court issued a summons to him, Congress party president Sonia Gandhi on Thursday said that the party was fully behind him.
“Dr Manmohan Singh is our former Prime Minister and is known not only in our country but entire world as person of integrity and probity,” she said.
“We are here to offer our unstinted support and solidarity. We are fully behind him,” she said.
Gandhi led a march from the AICC headquarters in New Delhi to the residence of Manmohan Singh to express solidarity with the former Prime Minister. Gandhi, CWC members, party MPs and also other office bearers met at 24 Akbar Road in New Delhi following which the Congress President led the march to the residence of Singh on 3 Motilal Nehru Marg.
The Congress party president said that the party would use all the means at its command.
“We are sure he will be vindicated,” Gandhi said.
Party leader Anand Sharma said that the party wouldn’t bend to any pressure and was sure that the truth would finally emerge in the matter.
Former Prime Minster Manmohan Singh later said he was more than pleased by the solidarity and Sonia Gandhi’s gesture.
A special court on Wednesday had summoned Singh along with industrialist Kumar Mangalam Birla, ex-coal secretary PC Parakh and three others as accused in a case pertaining to allocation of Talabira-II coal block in Odisha in 2005 and asked them to appear before it on 8 April.
