This morning we take a look at how the national newspapers in New Delhi have covered the aftermath of the Sikkim earthquake which occurred Sunday night and the protests at Kudankulam Nuclear plant in Tamil Nadu.

The death toll for the quake which occurred Sunday measuring 6.8 on the Ritcher scale is expected to go up and could reach 130 according to newspaper reports. Even as soilders blasted blocking hill roads, 40 hydel project workers are feared dead. Papers have said the earthquake is a wake up call to the government’s disaster management teams to be better prepared and have made comparisons to the Japan earthquake. The army and rescue teams continue to work on rescue efforts, even as helicopters and personnel are deployed.

Meanwhile, in Kudankulam, the Prime Minister’s emissary, Narayan Swamy, met protesters and has told them that their safety is paramount. He has reportedly blamed local parties for fanning trouble. The Russian envoy, reacted to the protests, saying that if the protests continue its commissioning may get delayed, as cited by The Hindu.
