EC notice to Congress leadr for remarks against PM

The Election Commission on Wednesday issued a notice to a Congress candidate in Uttar Pradesh polls for allegedly making objectionable remarks against the prime minister and the state chief minister. Ajay Rai, contesting from the Pindara seat, has been given 24 hours to respond.

The notice referred to Rai’s Facebook live on 31 January in which he allegedly made the objectionable remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

Referring to a provision of the model code which states that criticism of other parties or their workers based on unverified allegations or distortion shall be avoided, the notice said the poll watchdog prima facie is of the opinion the Congress leader has violated it.

Akhilesh betrayed people by withdrawing cases against those booked on terror charges:Nadda

Launching a scathing attack on Akhilesh Yadav, BJP national president J P Nadda on Wednesday said the Samajwadi Party chief betrayed the people of Uttar Pradesh by withdrawing cases against those booked under terrorism charges. “Akhilesh Ji, these days, is seeking votes and talking about development. Till now, he had only developed his family, but now he has realised that Uttar Pradesh should be developed.

He will not bring ‘vikas’ (development), but ‘vinash’ (destruction) in the state,” he said at an election meeting here. The BJP leader also asked the audience, “Did 200 riots not take place during the five-year rule of the Akhilesh Yadav government?” Referring to the withdrawal of terror cases against two men belonging to Azamgarh and Jaunpur in connection with the 2007 bomb blasts in Gorakhpur and at court compounds in Ayodhya, Lucknow and Varanasi, he said, “I am posing these questions to Akhilesh Yadav. When he comes here, media should seek an answer from him.”

Sharpening his attack on the SP chief, Nadda said, “Can you let such a person who releases terrorists be the chief minister? The case of CRPF camp attack in Rampur was also withdrawn in 2012… the then CM gave shelter to terrorists, saved them and withdrew the cases against them. “Akhilesh, in the order withdrawing the case, had said that it was done for communal harmony — I have never seen such a patriotic person, this is how you are serving Uttra Pradesh. Is it not betraying the people?” he said.

BJP using agencies to defame those it is afraid of: Akhilesh

On the sidelines of his campaigning in Gonda for the fifth phase of the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav commented on the arrest of NCP leader Nawab Malik. He said the BJP used central agencies such as the Enforcement Directorate to defame those it was scared of.

“If BJP is scared of someone, it brings agencies (ED) to defame them (Nawab Malik) and sends them to prison after false trials. We’ve seen this multiple times, BJP once said it’s in danger after a pouch was found in the assembly, which actually was sawdust,” the SP chief added.

RPN Singh mocks Priyanka’s ’ladki hoon’ slogan, says PM breached caste barriers

Former Union minister R.P.N. Singh, who recently crossed over to the BJP, said the ‘ladki hoon’ slogan coined by his old party will have no effect on the assembly polls, claiming that the Congress tickets have gone only to the wives of its leaders.

He also dismissed the impact of UP minister and Other Backward Class leader Swami Prasad Maurya switching over to the Samajwadi Party and said Prime Minister Narendra Modi has breached caste barriers with development schemes guided by the inclusive mantra of ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vishwas’. Once a close aide of Rahul Gandhi, Ratanjit Pratap Narain Singh aka RPN said the Congress now does not exist as a party or an ideology.

Asked about Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s ‘Ladki hoon, lad sakti hoon’ (I am girl and can fight) slogan, he mocked that a “poster girl” from that campaign had herself switched to the BJP. “Every person gives a slogan in the election. If the Congress has given a slogan it will have no effect in the election because the tickets have been given to the wives of Congress leaders," he told PTI in an interview at his ancestral home.

‘Double century’ of seats for SP by Phase 4: Akhilesh

Akhilesh Yadav on Wednesday said the Samajwadi Party-led alliance will score a double-century of seats by the fourth phase of Uttar Pradesh polls and asked people to ensure a historic win for the coalition. He also took a dig at Union Home Minister Amit Shah over his reported promise of providing laptops to those who take “admission in Inter after passing class 12”.

Inter is the short form of Intermediate and refers to classes 11 and 12. “There is a leader in the BJP who… made a statement on distributing laptops and whoever heard it has gone ’lotpot’ (split their sides laughing).” “He said those who take admission in Inter after Class 12 will be given laptops. Good that he did not say those doing class 10 after Inter will get a laptop, else people would be perturbed,” Yadav said at an election meeting here.

Making light of the BJP targeting the Samajwadi party with new sobriquets, he said, “They are going A for this, B for that … and reading ABCD these days.” “I want to make them learn Hindi… ‘kaka’ stands for ‘kala kanoon’ (black agri laws) which have gone and so will ‘Baba’ (Yogi Adityanath).” Elated over the sizeable crowd in the meeting, the Samajwadi Party chief said many BJP leaders will become invisible after seeing this “‘jansailab’ (sea of people)”. “The polling in the fourth phase will complete a double century for us. It is now the responsibility of the people to ensure a historic win for the Samajwadi Party-led alliance,” Yadav said.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Wednesday told ANI, “We will win over 300 seats. SP-BSP made claims in 2017 also but we formed the government and will repeat the same this time also.” The BJP leader cast his vote in Lucknow. According to the data shared by the Election Commission, the turnout figure as of 9 am showed that an average of 9.10% voters had exercised their franchise Wednesday. With voting underway for the fourth round in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday urged people to come out and vote. Voting for 59 Assembly constituencies spread over nine districts in Uttar Pradesh began on Wednesday morning. Voting disrupted at booth number 71 of Unnao Vidhansabha 165 of Unnao district due to malfunctioning of EVMs, claimed Samajwadi Party on Twitter. Shortly after casting her vote from Lucknow, BSP chief Mayawati lashed out at the Samajwadi Party saying that Muslims are not happy with the party. “People of Uttar Pradesh have rejected SP as voting for SP means Gunda raj, Mafia raj,” Mayawati was quoted as saying as per ANI. Polling for the fourth phase of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections will be held in 59 constituencies today as curtains came down for the intense electioneering on Monday. The fate of all the 624 candidates contesting in the fourth phase of the UP elections will be sealed in the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) tomorrow. These 59 Assembly seats are spread across the districts of Pilibhit, Lakhimpur Kheri, Sitapur, Hardoi, Unnao, Lucknow, Rae Bareli, Banda, and Fatehpur. Lakhimpur Kheri hogged the national limelight after eight people, including four farmers, were killed after being mowed down by a vehicle during a protest. The BJP leader Ajay Kumar Mishra’s son Ashish Mishra is accused in the case. The BJP’s Yogesh Verma had won the Lakhimpur seat in the 2017 Assembly polls by defeating Samajwadi Party’s Utkarsh Verma Madhur with a formidable margin of more than 37,000 votes. The prestige of the Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Ajay Mishra Teni will also be at stake in the Lakhimpur Kheri constituency. He’s a local MP, besides having been at the center of controversy after his son was named in the FIR in the incident leading to the deaths of the farmers. Interestingly, both the BJP and the SP have repeated their candidates. The constituency caught the eyeballs in the ongoing polls because of the political heat generated by the Lakhimpur Kheri violence in the Parliament and also outside. Congress has fielded Ravi Shankar Trivedi whereas the BSP has fielded Mohan Bajpai from the seat. Khushi Kinnar from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is also in the fray along with AIMIM’s Mohammad Usman Siddiqui. Another keenly watched seat in this phase is the Sarojini Nagar seat in Lucknow where the former joint director of Enforcement Directorate, Rajeshwar Singh, is pitted against former IIM professor and a close aide of the former Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, Abhishek Mishra. Raebareli Sadar is one of the battles to watch out for with its sitting Congress MLA Aditi Singh now being a BJP nominee. State Law Minister Brijesh Pathak is facing Samajwadi party candidate and two-time Corporator Surendra Singh Gandhi in the Lucknow Cantonment seat. The UP minister Ashutosh Tandon is in the fray from the Lucknow East seat against Deputy Speaker of Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly Nitin Agarwal, who is the Samajwadi Party nominee. The state is witnessing a multi-cornered contest with Congress, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Samajwadi Party (SP)-Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) alliance, and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) as principal contenders. As a last-minute effort, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath while addressing an election campaign in Raebareli on Monday promised the launch of the Purohit Welfare Board in the state for the welfare of priests, sadhus, and special scholarship for students studying Sanskrit if the BJP is re-elected to power. Meanwhile, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, while addressing a rally in Hardoi, alleged that the BJP was trying to divert people’s attention from real issues by speaking about “religion, Pakistan, and terrorism”. Voting for the remaining three phases of the seven-phase UP elections will take place on 27 February, 3 and 7 March. The counting of votes will take place on 10 March.
