Priyanka campaigns for Congress in Bundelkhand

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Monday held poll campaigns for party candidates in the Bundelkhand region of Uttar Pradesh where Assembly election is due on 20 February. The Congress general secretary and party affairs in-charge in UP sat atop an SUV as she held door-to-door campaigns in Orai and Kalpi of Jalaun district.

Flanked by party workers and supporters, Priyanka also visited Maudaha in Hamirpur district for the poll campaign where she made fervent pitches for Congress candidates. Purported visuals from the rally showed that when Priyanka Gandhi was passing through the Maudaha market, she spotted a young girl in the crowd who was cheering for her. She then called the girl to her car. The Congress leader tied what party workers said was the ‘Ladki hoon lad sakti hoon’ band on the girl’s wrist before her convoy moved ahead once again. Hamirpur and Jalaun in the Bundelkhand region of UP will go to polls on 20 February during the third phase of Assembly elections in the state. The elections to the 403 assembly seats in the state are being held in seven phases and votes will be counted on 10 March.

Superintendent of Police S Anand, however, told PTI that the candidate was taken to a police station and his vehicle was searched following inputs that he was distributing money ahead of Monday’s polling.

Congress policies destroyed industries, says PM

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said that the BJP-led alliance will form the next government in Punjab and a new chapter of development will start in the state.

He also hit out at the Congress government in Punjab, saying he wanted to pay obeisance at the Devi Talab Mandir here, but the police and the administration were unable to make arrangements.

“In Punjab, the NDA alliance will form government. In Punjab, a new chapter of development will start. I want to assure the people, especially the youth, that for their brighter future, we will not leave any stone unturned,” Modi said while addressing his first physical rally in the state for the 20 February Assembly polls.

On 5 January, the prime minister had to return from Punjab without attending any event, including a rally, after his convoy got stuck on a flyover due to a blockade by protesters in Ferozepur. For the state polls, Modi had on February 8 addressed a virtual rally.

Congress policies have destroyed industries and affected employment in Punjab, Modi said as he took a dig at the party by asking the gathering whether those who are fighting among themselves give a stable government.

The BJP is contesting the elections to the 117-member Punjab Assembly in alliance with the Amarinder Singh-led Punjab Lok Congress and the Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa-led Shiromani Akali Dal (Sanyukt).

Dhindsa and Singh were present at the Jalandhar rally.

BSP fighting UP polls with ‘full might’: Mayawati

Former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Maywati on Monday said her Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) is contesting the ongoing Assembly polls with “full might” in order to usher in ‘achche din’ of governance in the state like it had done in 2007. Addressing a public event in Orai in Jalaun district of the Jhansi zone, where elections are scheduled on February 20 in the third phase of the polls, she went all guns blazing against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Congress and Samajwadi Party (SP) as she pointed out the ills of their regimes in the state.

The BSP supremo dubbed Congress as “strongly casteist”, BJP as “pro-capitalist” and working for “narrow agendas of RSS” and claimed the SP gave freehand to criminals during its rule in the state.  “Our party is preparing and contesting the polls with full might to once again form a government with full majority so that once again the ‘achche din’ of BSP governance can come back in the state like it happened in 2007,” Mayawati said.

‘Achche din’ or ‘good days’ is commonly associated with the BJP, which had widely used the Hindi phrase in run up to the 2014 general elections. Mayawati said the BSP has given tickets to candidates on the basis of population representation in the region like it has done in the past.

Ashish Mishra had moved the Lucknow bench of the High Court on Friday seeking insertion of sections 302 (murder) and 120 B (criminal conspiracy) of IPC that were “inadvertently” not mentioned in the high court order as the jail authorities would not release him due to the omission.
