The Mother Earth organization founded by Neelam Chibber is playing a vital role in ensuring that local craftsmen around Karnataka are able to sustain their livelihoods. “Traditionally NGO’s have supply driven models. When we started the business however, we were looking at a demand driven model because rural producers don’t know what to make for urban markets, as they are completely cut off from them. Design has been the biggest enabler”, Chibber said.
Chibber said that Mother Earth was first founded as an experiment to see if rural arts and crafts were marketable. The success of the model has seen it spread across 17 Self Help Groups in and around Bangalore. The products are now marketed in urban areas of India as well as markets overseas.
